Registrars Workers Threatened With Compulsory Redundancy
|
Date: 18th Mar 2003
A number of Core Agency Staff working for LTSB’s Registrars operation in Worthing turned to LTU for support after being threatened with compulsory redundancy.
These staff, like many others working for Registrars, are untypical of the common perception of Agency Staff. Rather than providing transitional cover for staff shortages and peaks in workload, many Agency Staff have been continuously employed on Registrars work for many years. Until recently, over half of all Registrars workers were Agency Staff.
The Agency Staff concerned have been employed on Core Contracts. The Bank and Agencies had insisted that these Core Contracts were introduced to provide more security of employment and more comparable employment conditions to permanent LTSB Staff.
It is therefore all the more surprising that, following the closure of their section, the Bank should have made little effort to find these staff alternative positions – which clearly exist – that would allow them to continue on their current employment arrangements.
LTU has taken up the cases of those Agency Staff affected who are also LTU members. The Union has made it clear that it doesn’t accept that these staff should be treated in such a cavalier way and that it will make every effort to protect these staff from compulsory redundancy. If negotiations alone do not succeed in achieving this then it is likely that the Union will support the staff in pursuing legal action.
