Saturday Working Expansion – Safeguards Negotiated
|
Date: 1st Apr 2003
Lloyds TSB has announced plans to double to 500 the number of branches open on Saturdays.
Initially only a 100 further branches will open and an extra 100 full time equivalent staff will be provided to support this initiative. The remaining staffing requirement will then be made up from staff on flexible contacts changing their hours and other staff who volunteer to change work patterns.
When the Bank last reviewed its plans for Saturdays in 1999 LTU negotiated safeguards for staff which spelt out that any changes to working patterns for staff not on flexible contracts must be entirely voluntary and that staff were under no obligation to discuss or change their existing hours of work. These have been reiterated for this latest initiative.
These safeguards also apply in practice to many staff on flexible contracts. If over a rolling six-month period the employees work pattern has remained the same and no reminder has been received about working to a flexible contract, then the contract will be treated as no longer flexible. Any request from the Bank to amend the working pattern from then on may be declined, whether in relation to Saturday working or otherwise.
