LTU Launches Campaign For Part-Time Staff
|
Date: 18th Jul 2003
LTU has launched a campaign to achieve a fair deal for Part-time Staff working across the Lloyds TSB Group.
The areas identified by members as of greatest concern to them, which LTU will be prioritising during its campaign on behalf of Part-time Staff, are:
* Equal access to Promotion and Career Progression relative to Full-time Staff.
Many Part-time Staff have complained that because they work reduced hours then they are viewed as having little interest in being promoted and are overlooked for such opportunities when they arise.
* Greater access to training / communication.
Because of their working patterns, many Part-time Staff have complained that they have missed out on important training opportunities to strengthen their skills and knowledge base. More effort needs to be taken by the Bank to widen access to training for all staff.
* Full consideration of Hours of Work and Domestic Responsibilities when redeploying Part-time Staff between different offices.
What may be considered a reasonable journey to work for a full-time member of staff working a typical 7 hour day may not necessarily be so for someone working fewer hours.
The Bank's Mobility Clause - typically restricting the journey to work expected of Full-time Staff to a maximum of 25 miles by car or 75 minutes door-to-door by public transport - should be adjusted pro-rata for Part-time Staff based on their daily working hours.
* Better holiday leave opportunities.
Part-time Staff often have to take their holidays to care for their children outside term time. Separate Holiday Lists should operate for Part-time Staff to increase their flexibility without depriving Full-time Staff.
* More flexibility to take time off for family illness and other pressing family emergencies, and to not have to 'make up' any time off taken simply because they work reduced hours.
Part-time Staff often have to balance their work and family life and therefore need flexibility to take time off when faced with a family illness such as that of a child. Many Part-time Staff have, however, complained that when presented with these circumstances their managers have been insufficiently flexible.
These issues will form the centre-piece of LTU's campaign for 'A Fair Deal For Part-time Staff'.
Though LTU already represents most Part-time Staff - with over 11,000 already in membership – the Union is urging any remaining non-members to support the campaign by also joining LTU straightaway.
