Customers To Be Given Say On 'Jobs To India'
|
Date: 2nd Aug 2003
LTU is giving Lloyds TSB customers a say in whether work servicing their accounts should be exported to India.
The Bank is carrying out a pilot exercise, basing up to 250 jobs at a remote centre in Bangalore, and the Union is concerned that eventually the India operation will be expanded, involving thousands more jobs.
A recent survey of members has shown that 90% support LTU in its campaign against the export of UK-based jobs to India or anywhere else where the main motive is the use of cheap labour to the detriment of British jobs.
And a massive 89% of members thought customers would be generally unhappy with the movement of Lloyds TSB work and/or jobs abroad.
The next phase of LTU’s campaign will give customers more information on the issues involved and invite them to sign a petition urging Lloyds TSB to keep all its jobs servicing UK customers in the UK. As part of LTU's campaign, teams from the Union will be speaking to customers outside a large number of branches across the country in a rolling programme.
This will give the Bank the opportunity to reconsider the merits of exporting work abroad and recognise that cost should not be the only consideration.
More positively, customer feedback should show the Bank that it would be better off making a virtue of dropping its plans and showing its commitment to the UK economy by keeping jobs in Britain.
