Newcastle Call Centre to close with the loss of 960 Jobs…
Date: 30th Oct 2003
Lloyds TSB has announced the closure of its Newcastle Call Centre which will result in the loss of 960 jobs by the end of 2004.

The closure of Newcastle Call Centre is part of the Bank’s plans to move work to India and will cost 960 UK jobs.

The Bank intends to close the Call centre on a phased basis with the first 150 jobs going by the end of March 2004. A system of loyalty bonuses will be devised to reward staff for remaining at the centre until they are made redundant.

Staff turnover was cited as one of the main reasons for closure with 40% of staff new to the centre in the last year alone. LTU argues that this turnover arose because the Bank has failed to match local pay rates.

The Union says that, quite simply, the Bank is engaged in blatant cost cutting and as a result is failing to support its UK workforce as well as the economy of the country from which it derives most of its profit.
