New Grading Structure For Group IT
Date: 30th Jan 2004
In the past we have said that the main drawback of the current 4 band grading structure was the lack of career progression it offered to IT staff.

This problem had manifested itself in staff being incorrectly graded for their level of contribution and responsibilities and had got worse over the last 12 months. We suggested that this could be overcome by introducing more Bands.

Following discussions with the Bank we have agreed to increase the number of Grades to 8 for all staff in Group IT from 1st July 2004. There will also be 8 new job families, called ‘Skill Tracks’.
A set of grade criteria will detail the accountabilities, skills, experience and competencies required of staff at each level, with two distinct career paths - managerial and technical.

Mark Brown, Assistant General Secretary, said “The importance of the ‘read across’ exercise to the new structure cannot be overestimated given the potential impact it could have on salaries and benefits. Moreover, given what we have already said about staff being ‘under graded’ relative to their contribution it is important that this exercise is carried out thoroughly, transparently and that staff who disagree with their allocation to one of the new Bands get an opportunity to use an agreed appeals mechanism.”
