Group Operations - Improved Rest Breaks Agreed
|
Date: 2nd Apr 2004
In October LTU reported that it was nearing a breakthrough in it's longstanding campaign to persuade Group Operations to introduce a formal ‘Rest Breaks Policy’ for its staff. The case for paid rest breaks was strong;
- The Bank’s own research has shown that elsewhere in the Bank, such Formal Rest Break arrangements actually increase rather than decrease productivity because staff are less tired and jaded late into their work session.
- Sickness absence rates have been seen to fall.
- Working without proper breaks can lead to a range of health problems.
Although many areas of Group Operations had provision for rest breaks the practice was inconsistently applied and some areas such as Collections had no obvious policy whatsoever.
LTU has now agreed with the Bank improved and revised rest break standards that will apply across Group Operations.
Group Operations rest break policy will work as follows:
10% of an individual’s working day will be allocated or set aside for breaks from work/activity. This 10% is split as follows:
- 6% of working time is designated for breaks away from desks. Staff are encouraged to visit the toilet or collect drinks during these breaks, although there is no restriction on visiting the toilet and staff still have to be provided with regular access to drinks.
The 6% allowance has been used in many parts of Group Operations but is now to be standard across the whole of the Division.
- The remaining 4% is a broader allowance that provides for briefer breaks in normal work activity.
