The Widows Moves to India
Date: 22nd Apr 2004
Scottish Widows Senior Management has announced the first phase of its plans for the transfer of jobs to India.

At this stage up to 50 jobs are to be transferred to India, though LTU believes that the pilot will be laying the groundwork for a substantially bigger transfer of work to India beyond 2004; eventually affecting many hundreds of SW staff in Edinburgh and Chatham.

Between 150 and 175 staff in Chatham and Edinburgh will be directly affected by the work processes that are being off shored to India. The likelihood is that some of those staff will see the content of their jobs change because of the pilot. In its announcement Scottish Widows makes much of the fact that there will be no telephony or customer contact work involved in the pilot. However, Scottish Widows was not prepared to guarantee that this work would never be transferred to India.

Scottish Widows has said that there will be no job losses as a result of the pilot. However, such warm words are not going to be any comfort to those hundreds of staff who are involved in the kind of work that could easily be moved to India.

Mark Brown, Assistant General Secretary of LTU, said that, “Scottish Widows’ plans will be against the wishes of the majority of its customers, many of whom have signed LTU’s petition opposing the transfer of work to India. It will obviously also be against the best interests of staff in Chatham and Edinburgh, and the UK economy from which the company makes most of its profits”.
