Scottish Widows Unveils Plans To Export Further 125 Scottish Jobs To India
Date: 24th Aug 2005
Scottish Widows has announced plans to transfer the jobs of a further 125 Scottish staff to India by the end of November, increasing to 164 the total jobs it will have transferred from Scotland to India.

The company currently employs around 2,500 in Scotland. Other staff, who are based in Chatham, are unaffected by this latest announcement. This latest announcement specifically affects 125 Client Services staff who are employed at Dalkeith Road, Edinburgh. Scottish Widows has already transferred the work of a further 39 staff to India as part of a pilot that laid the groundwork for this announcement.

Several other leading banks – including Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) – have resisted the pressure to export work abroad, insisting that they remain committed to operating from the UK only.

The Union believes this is the thin end of a very big wedge, and that thousands more Scottish jobs are also at real risk of eventually being exported to India. In Scotland, Lloyds TSB employs over 3,500 staff in the types of operations most at risk from offshoring.
