Saturday Working

23rd January 2008

Lloyds TSB has said it wants to increase the number of branches opening on Saturdays.

LTU’s concerns with the Bank’s proposals, based on what happened a few years ago when the number of Saturday opening branches increased from 250 to 440, centre on the pressure, both direct and indirect, that will be exerted on staff on fixed term contracts and those on flexible contracts which have not been flexed to work on Saturdays. The type of behaviours LTU have experienced previously and find totally unacceptable on the part of the Line Managers include calling into question the commitment of staff to the Bank, threats to terms and conditions of employment, staff being asked to speak to their Local Directors to explain their decisions or their being asked repeatedly to reconsider or change their minds.

Mark V Brown, Assistant General Secretary, said “The Bank said that the kind of management practices that have been used in the past and are still being used to get staff to change their patterns of work have no place in Lloyds TSB. But we all know that what the Bank may say centrally and what goes on locally often differ greatly and there will be line managers at all levels who believe that pressurising staff to work on Saturdays is an acceptable management practice. It isn’t and it will not be tolerated by LTU.”
